Cairns Helicopter & Scenic Flights

See Cairns from above Reef, rainforest and open skies

A flight gives you a different view of Tropical North Queensland, from the patterns of coral reefs and sand cays to rainforest valleys and the Cairns coastline. Choose a short scenic helicopter flight, a longer reef and rainforest route, or a cruise package that adds time in the air to a day on the water.

Zoom’s scenic flights offer several routes and durations. Evolution and Sunlover packages combine reef activities with a helicopter flight, while hot air ballooning explores the Tablelands at a different pace. Compare the route, flight time and transport arrangements carefully: a scenic flight at the reef and a helicopter transfer back to Cairns are different experiences.

Scenic flight questions

How much does a helicopter tour in Cairns cost?

The price depends on the flight duration, route and package. Compare the current prices on the tours above, then check your selected date and passenger numbers for the booking total. A standalone scenic flight, a reef cruise with a short helicopter circuit, and a cruise with a helicopter transfer have different inclusions. Check any additional charges and transfers before choosing.

Should I choose a 30, 45 or 60-minute helicopter flight?

Choose the scenery first, then the duration. Compare the 30-minute Inner Reef flight with the 45-minute Reef and Rainforest flight. A longer flight allows more time in the air, but the route matters too: two flights of the same duration can visit different landscapes. Read the itinerary to see whether your flight focuses on coral reefs, rainforest or both.

Can I see the Great Barrier Reef and rainforest on the same flight?

Yes. The 45-minute Reef and Rainforest flight and 60-minute Reef and Rainforest flight combine both landscapes in one outing. Choose a reef-only flight if coral formations and sand cays are your priority, or a rainforest route if you would rather explore the mountains and gorge scenery from above. The individual tour describes the planned route; the pilot may adjust it for conditions.

What is the difference between cruise/fly, fly/cruise and a reef scenic flight?

Cruise/fly means travelling out by boat and returning by helicopter, as on the Evolution Cruise Out and Helicopter Return tour. Fly/cruise reverses that order; see the Sunlover Helicopter Out and Cruise Return tour. A short scenic flight at the reef is different: you take a helicopter circuit during your reef visit and return by boat. Compare the flight time, direction of travel and total time at the reef before booking.

Can I combine a helicopter flight with snorkelling or diving?

Yes. The Evolution and Sunlover combinations listed above include reef time alongside a helicopter experience. Compare Evolution’s reef cruise and helicopter flight with snorkelling or its reef cruise and helicopter flight with an introductory dive. A separate certified-diving option is also listed above. Choose the package that matches your plans and experience, and follow its specific diving and flight requirements. A standalone scenic flight does not include time in the water.

Where do Cairns helicopter tours depart from?

Departure arrangements depend on your tour. Zoom standalone scenic flights depart from its base at 21 Bush Pilot’s Avenue in the General Aviation area of Cairns Airport. Cruise and flight packages have different meeting arrangements because part of the journey is by boat. Follow your booking confirmation for the check-in location and time, and check whether accommodation transfers are included.

Can I book a helicopter flight if I am travelling alone?

Solo travellers may be able to join a shared departure. Zoom requires at least two passengers to schedule a flight and sometimes has a spare seat on an existing departure. A single seat is subject to availability, so enquire about your preferred date before planning the rest of your day around it.

Can children go on a Cairns helicopter tour?

Check the child and infant conditions for your chosen flight before booking. Age rules, seating arrangements and fares can differ between operators and packages. Tell us the ages of everyone travelling, including infants, so the operator can confirm a suitable arrangement for your family.

Are there passenger weight limits, and will I get a window seat?

Passenger weights are needed to plan the aircraft load and seating. Provide accurate details when booking and check the weight limit for your selected flight. Seating is assigned by the operator or pilot, and a window seat is not guaranteed on shared flights. Discuss any seating or access needs before booking.

What happens if the weather affects my helicopter flight?

Flights and routes depend on weather and operating conditions. The operator decides whether a flight can proceed or needs to change. If your flight is affected, the available alternatives and any refund arrangements depend on your booking terms. Leaving some flexibility in your holiday dates can help if another departure is offered.
